Reversing the typical relationship between a stairway and its railing, these stairs were generated by the railing which in turn, was derived by a modifying the formula for a reversible helix.
The resulting digital model was transferred to the physical world in three iterations. The first was made out of paper. The second was a 3D print. Finally, the third iteration sought to highlight the digital-to-physical relationship by segmenting the individual surfaces of the stairwell by their slope, then projecting these segments flat on to the ground plane – creating families of shapes based on something that is otherwise hard to perceive.

Using Grasshopper, a C# script controls the shape of the spiral by exposing four parametric variables.

The resulting curves served as basis for the medial surfaces of the stairwell.

Our last model segmented individual surfaces of the stairwell by their slope, then projected these segments flat on to the ground plane – creating families of shapes based on something that is otherwise hard to perceive.
